My layout is "N" scale. It's one size smaller
than HO scale. I use a quarter to show the size comparison in some of the
pictures. My theme is circa 1935-1955, set in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of
California, at an elevation of about 5,000 ft. This was an era when steam engines
where still the work horse and diesels were just coming online. I use a "state
of the art" Digital Command Control system (DCC), not a transformer. It's computerized and allows
me to run numerous engines at different speeds going opposite directions or
stopped, while others are running on the track. The engines have tiny computers
that I installed in them that control speed, direction and sound. Then I program
them to reproduce the various sounds of the whistles,
bells, steam chuffing and diesel motors associated with each engine. Be sure to
turn your volume up to hear the audio! I've been working on this model railroad
since 2007. I still have a lot of work to do on the scenery. I built the wood
trestles from unfinished fir, not balsa. Then I stained them. I created each
trestle design according to specifications of the era. I built the buildings
from kits and painted them accordingly. I'll put working lights in them later. I'm ready to start
placing trees, shrubs, grasses, rocks, realistic water, more buildings,
roads, streets, RR crossings, telephone poles, vehicles, working street lights, people, animals and more! I'll update
this website as it progresses. My goal, when completed, is that when I take a
photo, it will look so real you'll have to look twice ...and then you still
won't be sure!
