Mark Peterson, - "painter of time"

My Painting Philosophy

Mostly, I like to do nostalgic scenes. More than just a pretty picture on the wall, "it makes ones' memory work". Many folks have told me this. I see my work as a sort of "Mental Time Machine" in that sense, because many things I have painted are now gone. Country stores for instance, are now "quick stop" markets. I record "our" point in time. That's what the masters did. They had no cameras and without their work, we would not know what "their" point in time looked like. We are indebted to them. Many people do not understand this point: "The historic aspect greatly increases the value of their works today". Most people harbor the misconception that value is only about "good" artwork. When a painting is completed and the subject matter, color, light source, tones, dynamics and texture are all in balance and harmony is achieved, the effect is far greater than what a photograph can produce. Many times, one cannot tell where the canvas begins, because the emulation of depth can be attained to a much higher degree than that of a camera.
